I wanted to take the 4TB disk out of a G-Technology G-DRIVE unit to use in another enclosure with USB 3.0 and thought I’d install a spare disk in the case after I finished.

  1. Perfect timing. It seems my G-Drive just died as it won’t even mount and Disk Utility can’t open it or repair it. I took the unit apart and it’s a 4TB HGST SATA drive. Will any 3.5” SATA drive work as a replacement or do I need to pay attention to the voltage ratings, etc? Or do I just buy an OWC Elite Pro drive/enclosure and put this G-Drive out to pasture?

  2. Hello Brian..
I have a G-Technology G-Drive with Thunderbolt 3TB that unfortunately had a kind of electric problem..so to explain shortly, the hard disk is ok and fully functionnal but the Disk case alimentation is not working anymore..just wondering if you think there is a possibility to repair this kind of problem and where to search for help..thanks by advance for your advice and answer..regards..J.C

  3. Legally speaking, "warranty void" stickers aren't valid/ or legal if you're in the US, because of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act from the 70's. The problem is, are you going to spend the cost for a lawyer and court costs to take the company to court over something that costs less than $200. You would win, but at what cost. That's the real issue and why companies that put them on there do it.

  4. this works great if the drives are empty or will be wiped/formatted.  alot of these enclosures do something to the partition table that makes them only viewable in that enclosure.  once you take them out and use them in a mac or pc, the partitions will not be viewable, so be careful. i've had this happen to me with lacie and gtech drives and it was a horrible experience.  i had to use recovery software to pull all the data off safely.  secondly, if its a dual drive enclosure, your pretty much guaranteed it wont be seen outside the enclosure since they are usually in a RAID array in the inclosure.
