The coronavirus pandemic is a tragedy, but the FT’s Martin Sandbu believes it could also be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to rebuild better economies that work for everyone.
He explains how some past crises have led to positive change, and why cutting labour costs while taxing wealth and high polluters could create a more equitable society. But do we have the political will?

Not in the UK total corruption 👍
Taxing wealth is easier said than done. What about all the tax havens? At best you'd just tax the upper middle class
Some good suggestions like lowering income tax, but in my opinion a wealth tax should be kept small. There is no sense in cutting the tall grass down just to burn it in wasteful government programmes. Better to leave people free to accumulate capital and spend it on ventures they deem profitable or charitable causes they deem good.

I'm curious – if there is a 9-5 position a person is working on, what would stop the employer to source it out overseas making the new employee working 14 hours and paying 1/10th of that income? No benefits, no pension, less liability. Just a thought, as many people seem to live in this dream they can work from home moving forward, illusive work balance dreamland. Once the dust settles things can get really ugly for many
Well said Mr Sandbu!
Tax carbon emissions…. Shift production to India and China…. Less jobs in home country…. More inequality…. Tax even more carbon emissions…
